Hockey Career

Before he was selected by Spartak Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League, 43rd overall of the Kontinental Hockey League(KHL) at age 16, Igor Shesterkin played as a youth for the Krylya Sovetov Moscow. Igor played his first season with Spartak Moscow at the MHL level , featuring for the MHK Spartak in the 2012-13 season. Midway through the next 2013–14 season, Igor made his professional and KHL debut after being called up from MHK to play the final 8 minutes for Spartak in Alexei Ivanov’s place during a 5–3 loss against HC Ugra on January 20, 2014. Three days later, he had his first start, and on January 23, he lost 3-1 to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl while allowing two goals.

He secured his first victory in his eighth appearance, making 33 saves in a 3-0 shutout victory over HC Slovan Bratislava on March 2. Igor helped MHK Spartak win the MHL Championship by posting a 12-7 record in 19 playoff games, 1.75 goals against average, a.937 save percentage, and four shutouts. After showing a lot of potentials and dedicating commitment to the game, Igor after ending his contract with Spartak inked a new deal with perennial powerhouse, SKA Saint Petersburg on June 6th 2014.

Igor was recruited by the New York Rangers in the fourth round, 118th overall, of the 2014 National Hockey League Entry Draft as the fifth-ranked goalkeeper overall. Igor and the New York Rangers agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract on May 3, 2019. On September 21, Shesterkin made his NHL debut, stopping 36 of 40 shots in a 4-1 loss against the Philadelphia Flyers. He was transferred to the Hartford Wolf Pack, an American Hockey League affiliate team of the New York Rangers.

On October 5, Hartford’s 2019–20 season began. Igor made his AHL debut that night, making 26 saves in a 5-3 victory over the Charlotte Checkers. Igor was recalled by the Rangers on January 6, 2020, following his performance with the Wolf Pack, where he had a 15-4-3 record and was selected for the 2020 AHL All-Star Classic. He also made 29 saves in a 5-3 victory against the Colorado Avalanche on January 7th 2020 and in just two days, he managed to earn his place as the sixth Rangers’ goaltender to secure his first two victories with the team.

Igor, on the 23rd of February 2020 suffered a rib fracture after he was involved in nearly fatal car accident with his teammate, Pavel Buchnevinch. He also earned his first shutout of his National Hockey League career in a 3-0 victory against New Jersey Devils on April 13th 2021. Subsequently on 15th Spril, Igor secured his second shutout with a 4-0 win against the New Jersey Devils.

He was ranked the second Ranger to secure his shutouts back-to-back and also the first Ranger with back-to-back shutouts since Antti Raanta in December 2016. He also became the third Ranger in the history of the team to record shutouts twice against the same opponent.

International Plays

Igor while securing his goal medal was not involved in any action throughout the tournament as Russia’s third goaltender. He was also a member of the Olympic Athletes from the Russia team at the 2018 Winter Olympics. In the 2018 World Championship, Igor represented his homeland, Russia and was one of the best goaltenders. His final stats were third-best at the competition, with two victories (both shutouts), a 1.46 goals against average, and a.942 save percentage.
